Parent visa cost: what each parent visa costs in 2026-27

A parent visa costs from AUD8,665 (subclasses 103 and 804) or AUD49,900 (subclasses 143 and 864) for a single applicant, paid in two instalments, and the temporary 173 and 884 visas cost from AUD33,375 and AUD35,430.

Charges below are as at 19 October 2026, based on Home Affairs’ current visa pricing. For the options overview, see parent visa Australia.

Parent visa cost by subclass

These are single-applicant government charges, not a budget for support obligations or legal fees.

| Visa subclass | Single-applicant starting charge in AUD | First instalment | Second instalment | Payment timing |---|---|---|---|---|---| | 103 — Parent | From AUD8,665 | AUD6,600 | AUD2,065 | First at lodgement; second when Home Affairs asks | 19 October 2026 | | 804 — Aged Parent | From AUD8,665 | AUD6,600 | AUD2,065 | Second when Home Affairs asks | 19 October 2026 | | 143 — Contributory Parent | From AUD49,900 | AUD6,300 | AUD43,600 | Second when Home Affairs asks | 19 October 2026 | | 864 — Contributory Aged Parent | From AUD49,900 | AUD6,300 | AUD43,600 | Second when Home Affairs asks | 19 October 2026 | | 173 — Contributory Parent (Temporary) | From AUD33,375 | AUD4,245 | AUD29,130 | Second before grant | 19 October 2026 | | 884 — Contributory Aged Parent (Temporary) | From AUD35,430 | AUD6,300 | AUD29,130 | Second before grant | 19 October 2026 | | 870 — Sponsored Parent (Temporary) | AUD1,515 plus AUD4,855 for up to 3 years, or AUD10,925 for up to 5 years | AUD1,515 | AUD4,855 or AUD10,925 | Second before grant | 19 October 2026 |

The parent visa subclass 103 page covers that route; aged parent visas covers subclasses 804 and 864.

For the parent contributory visa pathways, the standard direct-application charges differ from charges for temporary visa holders. The second instalment for a subclass 173 holder applying for subclass 143, or a subclass 884 holder applying for subclass 864, is AUD19,420; that figure alone is not the full pathway cost.

The two instalments: when each is paid

The first and second instalments are separate parts of the government visa charge, not two equal payments.

  1. First instalment: for subclass 103, AUD6,600 is payable when the application is lodged.
  2. Second instalment: for subclass 103, AUD2,065 is payable when Home Affairs asks. For subclasses 173, 884 and 870, the pricing information specifies payment before visa grant.

The single-applicant totals do not represent a combined charge for several applicants. Subclass 870 does not allow family members to be included in the application.

Other costs: health examinations, police certificates, Assurance of Support

An Assurance of Support is a legal commitment to repay government welfare payments made to the visa holder or accompanying family members. It is distinct from the visa application charge.

Expense or obligation Applicability Amount or costing basis
Assurance of Support Home Affairs determines whether the visa category requires it and issues a request after application Repayment commitment; a bank guarantee and term deposit may be required, depending on subclass
Subclass 870 health insurance The visa holder must maintain adequate health insurance Cost depends on the insurance arrangements
Subclass 870 sponsorship application Separate sponsorship application AUD420 as at 19 October 2026
Subclass 870 sponsor support Sponsor must provide financial support and accommodation Obligation rather than a fixed visa charge
Subclass 870 public health debts Sponsor must repay outstanding public health debts incurred by the parent Amount of the outstanding debt

For Contributory Parent and Contributory Aged Parent visas, the Assurance of Support period is 10 years. It starts on arrival or visa grant, whichever happens later, and cannot be cancelled once Home Affairs grants the visa.

Is the contributory visa worth it?

The contributory categories have higher standard charges and shorter published new-application estimates. That comparison does not establish which route is suitable.

Category Single-applicant starting charge Home Affairs’ new-application estimate
Contributory Parent / Contributory Aged Parent — standard subclasses 143 and 864 From AUD49,900 18 years
Parent / Aged Parent — subclasses 103 and 804 From AUD8,665 42 years

The Home Affairs parent visa estimates are as at 31 August 2026, page updated 6 October 2026. These are estimates, not promised waiting periods or an investment calculation.

The 870 cost

Subclass 870 has separate charges for stays of up to 3 or 5 years, not a single ten-year purchase. The cumulative maximum stay is 10 years, according to Home Affairs’ subclass 870 information.

For either ten-year-cost query, the relevant starting point is the charge for each application:

  1. Use the Home Affairs Visa Pricing Estimator for subclass 870.
  2. Compare the applicable stay option with the instalments in the table above.
  3. Keep the AUD420 sponsorship application fee separate from the visa charge.

The Sponsored Parent (Temporary) visa does not lead to permanent residence, permits no work and has no Assurance of Support requirement. Deciding which temporary parent visa suits the intended stay therefore involves more than comparing charges.
